Your two-year-old just got a new set of molars, your seven-year-old won't stop wiggling a loose front tooth, and your ten-year-old needs a checkup before soccer season. Moments like these bring families to our offices across Wisconsin's Coulee Region every week. At Rivertown Dental, we see children starting at age 2 in La Crosse, Holmen, Arcadia and Viroqua, so the whole family can get care in one familiar place close to home.

Pediatric dentistry is dental care designed around the needs of growing children, from the first baby teeth through the arrival of adult molars. For many families, the first reason to visit is simply getting started. A toddler's first appointment is often short and relaxed. We count teeth, look at the gums, talk with you about brushing and snacks, and let your child get comfortable sitting in the chair. Early visits like these help children learn that the dental office is a friendly place long before they ever need a filling.

The same general dentists who care for parents and grandparents care for kids here. That continuity matters. When a child grows up seeing the same team for cleanings, the conversations get easier each year, and we come to know your family's history, habits and concerns.

Prevention is the heart of children's care, and it is the most common reason families schedule with us. Routine dental cleanings and dental exams with our hygienists and dentists catch small problems early, often before a child notices anything. Digital X-rays help us see between teeth and check how adult teeth are developing below the gums.

Two treatments do a lot of quiet work for young smiles. Fluoride treatment helps strengthen tooth enamel, and dental sealants are thin protective coatings placed on the chewing surfaces of back teeth, where grooves can trap food. Fluoride is something our team cares about in the wider community too. Dr. Randall Moseng helped bring fluoridation to Holmen's water supply and volunteers with the La Crosse Mission of Mercy.

What if my child has a cavity or a dental emergency?

If your child has a cavity, we can usually treat it with a dental filling right here in our office. We explain what we see in plain language, show you why treatment is recommended, and answer your child's questions in a way that fits their age. Treating decay in baby teeth matters, since those teeth hold space for adult teeth and help children chew and speak comfortably.

Kids fall off bikes, take a hockey puck to the mouth, or wake up with a toothache. If you have a dental emergency, call the office closest to you for the earliest opening. We work to see emergencies the same day when our schedule allows, and we will do everything we can to accommodate same-day, next-day or walk-in care at any of our four offices.

How do you help nervous kids feel comfortable?

We go slowly, explain each step, and never judge. Some children walk in excited, while others need a little time to warm up, and both are completely normal. Our approach is called The Ascent Experience: advanced care, genuine comfort, and a better experience from start to finish. Families notice small touches, such as warm towelettes, blankets, support pillows and headphones.

For children who feel anxious during treatment, we offer nitrous oxide sedation, often called laughing gas, which helps them relax while staying awake. For parents who have their own dental worries, we offer IV sedation for adults, so everyone in the family can find a comfortable way to get care. Parents often find that a child's visits go more smoothly when a few habits are practiced at home:

  • Talk about the visit in simple, positive words.
  • Read a book or play pretend "dentist" with a stuffed animal.
  • Schedule appointments when your child is usually rested.
  • Bring a favorite comfort item if it helps.

How can we pay for our child's dental care?

We work with many dental insurance plans, so please call your local office to confirm your coverage. We also welcome self-pay patients.

For families without insurance, our Rivertown Membership Plans, also called the VIP Program, include a Kids plan along with Classic and Deluxe options. Plans include cleanings, exams, X-rays and fluoride, plus a discount on treatment. Membership plans cannot be combined with insurance. We also offer third-party financing through Cherry, CareCredit and Proceed Finance for patients who qualify, subject to each lender's approval.

How do we schedule our child's first visit?

Call the Rivertown Dental office nearest you to book. Our offices in La Crosse, Holmen, Arcadia and Viroqua serve families from Onalaska, West Salem, Westby, Whitehall and the surrounding towns. Our Arcadia team includes bilingual staff who can help Spanish-speaking families.

Whether it's a first checkup at age 2 or a routine cleaning before school starts, we would love to meet your child and help your family build healthy habits that last. Dentistry, Done Differently.
