Options Without Insurance

Our Rivertown Membership Plans include cleanings, exams, X-rays and fluoride, plus a discount on treatment.

Most dental problems start small and quiet. A little plaque along the gumline or a soft spot in the enamel rarely hurts at first, which is why it is easy to put off a checkup when life in the Coulee Region gets busy. At Rivertown Dental, our La Crosse, Holmen, Arcadia and Viroqua offices focus on catching those early changes during routine visits, so you can keep up with school, work and weekends on the river without a toothache getting in the way.

Preventive dentistry is the routine care that keeps your teeth and gums healthy before problems develop. In practice, that means regular cleanings with our dental hygienists, exams with one of our general dentists, and simple protective treatments that make teeth harder for decay to take hold. The goal is to find small issues early, when care is usually simpler, and to give you the habits and information you need at home.

This care fits every stage of life. We see patients of all ages, starting with children at age 2, so a parent, a teenager and a grandparent can all keep their checkups with the same practice. Young children may benefit from fluoride and sealants as their teeth come in. Adults often need attention to gum health and wear from clenching or grinding. Older patients may want closer monitoring of existing fillings, crowns or implants. Preventive care adjusts to where you are.

There is no special qualification for preventive care. If you have teeth, gums or dental work to protect, you are a good fit. That includes people who have not seen a dentist in years. We do not judge how long it has been. We simply start where you are, explain what we see in plain language, and help you plan the next step.

Depending on your needs, a preventive visit at our offices may include:

  • A professional dental cleaning to remove plaque and tartar
  • A dental exam and digital X-rays to check for decay and other changes
  • An oral cancer screening as part of your checkup
  • Fluoride treatment to help strengthen enamel
  • Dental sealants to protect the grooves of back teeth
  • A custom night mouth guard if grinding is wearing down your teeth

If your gums need more than a routine cleaning, we also provide scaling and root planing, gum disease treatment and periodontal maintenance in-house. And if we spot a cavity or a cracked tooth, we can talk through fillings or same-day CEREC crowns, keeping your care close to home.

How often should I come in for a cleaning and exam?

Most patients do well with regular checkups, and we will recommend a schedule based on your mouth rather than a one-size-fits-all rule. Someone with healthy gums and little history of decay may follow a standard routine. A patient managing gum disease or caring for implants may need to come in more often.

Your history, your home care and what we find during each exam all shape that recommendation. We will explain our reasoning so the plan makes sense to you, and we will adjust it as your needs change over time.

What can I do at home between visits?

Daily brushing and cleaning between your teeth do most of the work, and your visits help you fine-tune them. During your appointment, our hygienists can point out areas that tend to collect plaque and show you techniques that fit your teeth, braces, bridges or implants.

Preventive care also has a community side. Dr. Randall Moseng helped bring fluoridation to Holmen's water supply, a reminder that small, steady steps add up. If you wear a night guard, keep it clean and bring it to checkups so we can look at the fit. And if anything changes between visits, such as sensitivity, bleeding gums or a chipped tooth, let us know rather than waiting for your next appointment.

How can I pay for preventive dental care?

We work with many dental insurance plans, so please call the office to confirm your coverage. We also welcome self-pay patients.

If you do not have insurance, our Rivertown Membership Plans, also called the VIP Program, offer Classic, Deluxe and Kids options. These plans include cleanings, exams, X-rays and fluoride, plus a discount on treatment. They cannot be combined with insurance. For larger treatment that grows out of a preventive visit, third-party financing through Cherry, CareCredit and Proceed Finance may be available to patients who qualify, subject to each lender's approval. Our team can walk you through the options and current plan details.

What makes a visit with us comfortable?

Comfort is built into every appointment through what we call The Ascent Experience: advanced care, genuine comfort, and a better experience from start to finish. You may be offered a warm towelette, a blanket, a support pillow, headphones or essential oils while you relax in the chair.

Just as important are clear explanations and a team that listens. Whether you visit us in La Crosse, Holmen, Arcadia or Viroqua, we want routine care to feel easy enough that you look forward to coming back. Call the office closest to you to schedule your next cleaning and exam. We would be glad to see you and your family. Dentistry, Done Differently.

Questions

Preventive Dentistry FAQs

Does dental insurance cover preventive dentistry at Rivertown Dental?

Many dental insurance plans include preventive care, and our offices in La Crosse, Holmen, Arcadia and Viroqua work with many dental insurance plans, so please call your office to confirm your coverage. If you don't have insurance, our Rivertown Membership Plans (the VIP Program) offer Classic, Deluxe and Kids plans that include cleanings, exams, X-rays and fluoride plus a discount on treatment. Membership plans can't be combined with insurance, and we also accept self-pay patients.

Will my cleaning and exam be uncomfortable?

Most patients find preventive visits comfortable, and we do a lot to keep them that way. Every visit includes The Ascent Experience: advanced care, genuine comfort, and a better experience from start to finish. That means extras like a warm towelette, a blanket, a support pillow, headphones and essential oils, with clear explanations and no judgment about how long it has been since your last visit.

What is included in a preventive dental visit?

A preventive visit typically includes a professional dental cleaning with our hygienist and a dental exam with one of our dentists. Depending on your needs, we may also take digital X-rays, perform an oral cancer screening, or recommend fluoride treatment or dental sealants. Your dentist will walk you through what we see and what, if anything, is worth keeping an eye on.

At what age can my child start preventive dental care?

We see patients of all ages and welcome children starting at age 2. Kids can receive cleanings, exams, fluoride treatment and dental sealants at the same Coulee Region offices where their parents are seen. Having the whole family with one practice makes it easier to keep everyone on track.

What happens if my dentist finds gum disease or a cavity during my checkup?

If we find a problem, we'll explain your options clearly before any treatment begins. Depending on what we see, that may mean a dental filling, gum disease treatment such as scaling and root planing, or ongoing periodontal maintenance visits. Catching these issues during routine preventive care often means we can address them closer to home and with less involved treatment.
